On the Downlow

TWN Celebrates LGBT Pride with a special presentation of ON THE DOWNLOW, a sensitively handled documentary focusing on bisexual African-American men in Cleveland, Ohio who struggle to come out amidst the pressures of both the gay and black community.

Third World Newsreel (TWN) is an alternative media arts organization that fosters the creation, appreciation and dissemination of independent film and video by and about people of color and social justice issues. It supports the innovative work of diverse forms and genres made by artists who are intimately connected to their subjects through common bonds of ethnic/cultural heritage, class position, gender, sexual orientation and political identification. TWN promotes the self-representation of traditionally marginalized groups as well as the negotiated representation of those groups by artists who work in solidarity with them. For more information, please visit www.twn.org.

9:00PM NEWFILMMAKERS FEATURE PRESENTATION

Robin Massee A HERO’S WELCOME (2007, 90 Minutes, Video)
In their own words and memories, we witness the many actions, both big and small, that are undertaken to never forget the Normandy Invasion, among them: 100 WWII veterans honored with the French Legion of Honor, reminisce about the relationship between France and America on June 7, 2004; Six WWII veterans (ages 78 to 86) jump out of an airplane with parachutes over Ste. Mère Eglise to commemorate D-Day; and Junior high school students from Bayeux correspond with American veterans of D-Day. On June 7, 2004 they meet in the town square, and celebrate their newfound friendship in song and dance. French children adopt a WWII soldier’s grave and promise to put flowers on it once a year through Les Fleurs de la Mémoire association
